The New York Stone Center

Kidney stone disease occurs when crystals of stone-forming compounds lodge within the urinary tract and grow to a size which cannot be easily passed. Kidney stones can cause extreme pain as well as bleeding and infection. For these reasons, it is necessary to pulverize or remove the kidney stone.

In almost all cases, lithotripsy is the treatment of choice. Your urologist will determine if you are an appropriate candidate by reviewing your medical history and ordering tests and X-rays. Your testing and treatment can be performed at The New York Stone Center at The Long Island College Hospital. In addition to treatment, the center offers patients a complete metabolic and dietary evaluation. This will help to prevent the formation of future stones by evaluating chemical imbalances, dietary excesses, and insufficient food intake.

Should you choose the New York Stone Center, our staff is available to discuss treatment, answer questions and provide pre-treatment instructions.

What can you expect form the treatment
At the start of the procedure, our anesthesiologist will administer a mild sedation, local anesthetic or a regional anesthetic so that you remain comfortable throughout the treatment. Following anesthesia, you will lie down on the lithotriptor table. A smooth mechanical arm will be place d
against your lower back so that shock waves may be administered to the kidney stone. Following the procedure, you will rest in our comfortable recovery room and usually, you will be able to return home within one or two hours.

In two to three days, you should be able to return to your normal activities with the consent of your urologist. You may experience minor discomfort during this short recovery period. It is usual to experience some blood in your urine, nausea, and in some cases, a bruise on your back. These are all normal occurrences. Be sure to bring a family member or friend to take you home-- call (718 or 212) NYSTONE (697-8663), if you have any questions.
