Plant and Scrymser Project
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt
Hospitals will renovate the Plant and Scrymser Pavilions to provide the physical
space necessary to care for a rapidly growing population of patients suffering
from mental illness. This population includes children, adolescents, adults
and a specialized program for traumatized women. The redesign of the Pavilions
will house (1) our Child and Family Institute, which treats patients with
mental illness and/or substance abuse, who range in age from 4 to 18 years
old; (2) our Integrated Psychiatric Services Program, offering a continuum
of care for adults suffering from serious mental illness; (3) The Women’s
Health Project, providing specific treatments for women who have been victims
of crimes, trauma, or abuse and who suffer from addictions; and (4) The Addiction
Institute of New York.
Continuum Health Partners and St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals view the
Plant and Scrymser Pavilion Renovation Project as an investment in the mental
health of New York City and have secured a substantial amount of funding required
for it. To fully realize the project, however, we must ask for the support
of our closest friends, community philanthropists, grateful patients, corporate
neighbors, and national and regional foundations. We hope you share in our
vision and commitment to providing the finest clinical care and medical attention

Helen Sawaya Fund
The needs of a cancer patient go far beyond medical care. They extend to human needs for attention, comfort, convenience, and rest. Helen Sawaya Fund, established by Fuad Sawaya in 2005 in beloved memory of his wife Helen, answers to such needs. The originating idea came from Helen’s physician and dear friend, Dr. Gabriel Sara. After witnessing Helen’s difficult battle as well as countless other cancer patients’ struggles during treatment, he noted the power of little things that can, in reality, make a big difference in a patient’s daily life. The Helen Sawaya Fund at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospitals caters to those special needs, niceties as well as necessities, allowing the cancer treatment team to focus on a patient’s total well being, not just his or her medical condition. Access to music and art therapy, massage, support groups, and more can lift spirits, ease a burden, and promote healing, as testified by several of the fund’s benefiters. Indeed, a once traumatic experience is being alleviated through the “little things” that decrease both physical and emotional pain, and many patients are less afraid and anxious upon arriving for their treatment. The Helen Sawaya Fund, Continuum Cancer Centers of New York and relevant donors hope to further improve the quality of cancer patients’ daily life by providing them access to new services like guided imagery, meditation sessions, acupuncture, massage therapy, shiatsu, reiki and more.
