Volunteer Opportunities

Have you considered volunteering at your local hospital? Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Long Island College Hospital and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary need volunteer support in a variety of areas. Volunteering doesn't only benefit the hospital it benefits you, too! The rewards of volunteering are endless like knowing you helped put a smile on a patient's face when they need it most.

Volunteers are needed for a number of program and services. Assignments are made by matching the interests of the volunteer and the needs of the hospital as closely as possible. Volunteers are needed to :

Assist with patient advocacy
Work in the Gift Shop and Patient Library
Help with office work
Read, feed and talk to patients
Assist in hospital labs
Become a volunteer visitor for hospital AIDS programs
Translate for patients who do not speak English
Volunteer for the Hospice Program
Volunteer with the Cancer Center

Opportunities are available at numerous sites throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Prospective volunteers should review the information pertaining to each hospital. Continuum Health Partners thanks you for your interest in volunteering.

Beth Israel Medical Center

Volunteering is a wonderful way to give to others in the metropolitan community. At Beth Israel, there are many ways to help give patients support and comfort. The following are just a few of the volunteer opportunities available throughout the year:

The Cancer Center -

Positions available: day, evenings and weekends
Volunteers work directly with patients by visiting them and giving emotional support. There also other ways volunteers become involved with patients.

Library Volunteers -
Positions available: day, evenings and weekends
Deliver reading materials and read to our elderly and pediatric patients.

Support for the Elderly -

Positions available: days, evenings, no weekends
Through our HOPE program (Homebound Outreach Project for the Elderly), volunteers are able to make a difference in the lives of older adults who are in need of company and companionship. Visit elderly patients at their homes and/or provide telephone support. Please note that telephone support is scheduled for evenings between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. only.

Pediatric Advocates -
Positions available: days only
If you have some time to spare during the day and love children, Beth Israel is in need of volunteers to make our pediatric patients smile. Come in and read to them or color and draw.

Clerical Opportunities -
Volunteers who would like to help out in our busy offices can do so at various Beth Israel sites.

If you are interested in providing other services or in other areas within the hospital you should communicate your interests to our volunteer department.

How to Volunteer -
The volunteer department tries to match the volunteer's interests with the specific needs of the site. After you've contacted the volunteer department, by phone or email, you can expect an immediate response in just 24 hours. All prospective volunteers must be 14 years of age or older and are asked to come in for an interview and fill out an application. They must also be medically cleared by their physicians to work with patients. In addition, students or individuals who are between the ages of 14-17 must provide working papers.
